Since its declaration as provincial capital in 1822, Tenerife has been the commercial, administrative and port centre of the island.
In the north, there is "The rural park of Anaga", a spectacular tertiary forest of laurisilva with small populations and agrarian lands. In the northeast, there are small rural and fishing neighbourhood establishments. At this moment the city is doing some works at the “Teresitas Beach”. This entire zone is under a big modernization process with the tourist urban project designed by the French architect Dominique Perrault, thanks to an international contest.

The highest density of population is in the historical town centre and all across the new zone where the city is growing. In the southwest the city has had a curb on the growth because of the refinery. In the past, this industry was far from the City center but now is surrounded by it. Our challenger is to move the refinery from the city in medium / long term.

Our city is right now an interesting socio-economic enclave in the globalisation era that we are living in. The main reasons that support the competitive advantages of our city and our island are the infrastructures: two international airports with direct connections with the most important European cities and the north and west of Africa; the main Port of the island, where the most important part of the goods import come in and about 5 million tourist arrive per year. Santa Cruz is one of the most important stops for cruises between Europe and Caribbean. Finally we have to mention the new tram system that, since July 07, will connects Santa Cruz and La Laguna. All these points consolidate Santa Cruz de Tenerife as an open, modern and dynamic city, excellent enclave for economic and cultural transactions between the two continents (Europe and Africa).

Nowadays, the city has been under a development process with very important projects like the Auditorium (www.auditoriodetenerife.com) where the Classical Music Festival of the Canary Islands takes place every year (www.festivaldecanarias.com). The International Congress and Fair Centre that includes the World Trade Centre of Tenerife (www.iftsa.com). Both buildings are Santiago Calatrava´s projects.

In the same way there are very important projects under construction. For example: The "Eduardo Westerdahl Insular Culture's Centre” designed by Herzog & Meuron. This building will include new facilities as the "Alejandro Cioranescu Insular Library”, “Oscar Domínguez Contemporary Art Institute” and the new Insular Photography Centre.

One of the most important events is the Carnival declared as interesting international tourism Festival.

The main impulse of the economy is the Service Sector, integrated by a great number of enterprises that cover the different economic needs of the municipality.

The city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife through its local development agency "Sociedad de Desarrollo de Santa Cruz de Tenerife only carries out actions at a local level as regards as economic promotion, employment, tourism, services to entrepreneurs and business and innovation, sustainability and territorial development. Therefore, we could not take part actively in the decision-making process at an island or regional level. As a local development agency, the aims of us, in a few words, is to boost local economic development, improve social cohesion and stimulate urban development.
